Today is Orangemen’s Day in the province.
The denominational holiday is entrenched in many provincial and municipal collective agreements, along with St. George’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.
That means most provincial and municipal offices are closed – but it is not a Shops Closing Day, so stores, banks, the post office and many other facilities are open.
Orangemen’s Day dates to 1690 and the victory of Protestant King William of Orange over the Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne.
Historically, members of the Orangemen’s Society would march throughout many communities in Newfoundland and Labrador, but the practice has fallen out of fashion in recent decades.
