The centennial of the Royal Canadian Legion will be celebrated at the Lieutenant Governor’s annual Garden Party in St. John’s today.

The Legion was founded in 1925, and was incorporated via a special act of parliament in 1926 – which is recognized as their anniversary.

Lieutenant Governor Joan Marie Aylward says a special ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the Legion will kick off the event.

She says the office of the Lieutenant Governor has always had a strong relationship with the Legion.

She says the Blue Puttees would gather in the area, and the Lieutenant Governor also serves as the honourary colonel. “And so there’s a very strong link between the military, those who serve, and Government House. It’s a longstanding tradition, and one that we’re very proud of.”

National Legion president Berkley Lawrence and local command president Janis Boone will be in attendance.

The event takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. at Government House.
