NL Health Services says the expanded emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre will officially open on August 8.
The move shifts most of the emergency department into a new wing of the hospital, which is nearly three times the size of the old ER.
The main entrance and primary waiting area will shift to the right of the current doors, featuring a smaller, more modern space.
Officials say it will be among several new waiting areas, designed to “keep patients moving” through the ER, with “smaller pockets of waiting rooms.”
The expansion also features a 26-bed clinical assessment unit and several new trauma bays.
Additionally, a new, fully covered ambulance bay connecting to the new wing is set to open next week.
Access to the old part of the hospital (and the Tim Hortons), will not be available from the new ER for nearly a year while additional renovations are done.
