The Food Fishery Committee is calling on the federal minister to extend the food fishery to seven days a week along the province’s south and west coasts for the month of August.
Chair Merv Wiseman says that will allow residents and visitors to that part of the island to choose the safest and most suitable days for fishing, rather than be limited to specific days.
DFO is limiting access to the food fishery to three days a week due to fish stocks still in the critical zone.
Advocates suggest that expanding the number of days in which people can access the fishery would not increase the number of fish taken, but will allow people to take advantage of safer weather windows.
