Music has the ability to bridge the generational gap, and a group of local teens is bringing their talent to local seniors homes to do just that.
The Youth Sunshine Singers, an initiative through the Arts and Aging Network, is touring senior care homes to share songs, spark memories and build connections.
The 20 member group, made up of young people between the ages of 12 and 17 travelling to homes around the metro area this summer and singing to residents – many of whom have dementia.
Sisters Charlotte and Rachel Kerrivan say they learned about the Sunshine Singers through friends and decided to audition.
They say seeing the change in the seniors during their performance has been a highlight of the experience.
“When you first walk in, or they first arrive, most people don’t have a huge smile on their face, but then when you sing you realize how the music just completely changes their mood and they start smiling, dancing and singing and having the time of their lives.” says Rachel.
