St. John’s city council is set to vote next week on a proposed apartment development at 18 Mount Cashel Road that has raised the concern of area residents.
The proposal calls for the development of two 3-story apartment buildings on a piece of land between New Cove Road and Torbay Road which previously contained three small houses.
Maureen Whalen says Mount Cashel Road is the only access to Tiffany Lane which has seen a significant amount of development in recent years.
“The city designates it as a local road; it’s not a connector road. But it’s also the only access to Tiffany Lane, and if you think about what’s been put up in Tiffany Lane in the last 20 years, it’s significant. There’s over 403 residences, when you look at Tiffany Village, Tiffany condos…the Association for New Canadians and MUN has a pharmacy school there.”
Whalen’s concern is that the street is already busy enough without adding even more traffic to the equation.
“Even by the city’s own counts in 2014, they had extremely high volumes for such a local road…and nothing’s ever been done about that.”
She claims residents could not get satisfaction from city staff during a consultation process on the proposal. Council members have agreed, however, to meet with concerned residents ahead of next week’s vote.
