The Sierra Club of Canada would like to see Newfoundland and Labrador join the Maritime electricity MOU put forward last month.

Connor Curtis, director of communication with the environmental organization, says the initiative could be the way of the future when it comes to renewable energy in the country.

“We know that transmission infrastructure is really one of the big keys to unlocking renewable energy in a broader sense. When we’re talking about offshore wind, solar in some places, this is how you unlock that potential – by building transmission infrastructure,” Curtis said. “When it comes to initiatives to lower electricity costs for people, this makes a lot of sense as something to be a part of.”

Premier Tony Wakeham has said that Newfoundland and Labrador was focusing elsewhere regarding the electricity grid, namely Quebec. Negotiations between the two provinces are ongoing.
