The NunatuKavut Community Council has written the prime minister and the premiers of Quebec and NL indicating that its “rights, interests and way of life” be “addressed and accommodated” before any future developments at Churchill Falls and Gull Island proceed.
NCC began discussions on a socio-economic agreement with NL Hydro and the provincial government following the 2024 MOU. That process was halted when a review of the MOU was launched by the PC government.
NCC’s membership passed a resolution in 2024 giving the organization a mandate to advance negotiations with the provincial government and address what they say are outstanding issues related to hydro development in and around the Churchill River.
The group will be consulting with members over the coming months to “refresh” its negotiation mandate to ensure that their needs and priorities are upheld.
