Mount Pearl is going to make changes to traffic patterns in the area of Commonwealth Avenue, the T’Railway and Park and Ruth which it says will improve safety.

The project will include the installation of a pedestrian crossing, and a change to the lane configuration.

Mayor Dave Aker says the new flashing signals will notify road traffic to stop and remain so until pedestrians have crossed.

As for the lane configuration, vehicles travelling southbound in the outside (curb) lane on Commonwealth can continue straight through the intersection at Park and Ruth. Vehicles travelling eastbound on Ruth and turning right on Commonwealth will now be required to stop before entering the roadway, rather than yield to traffic.

The installation of signal poles, pavement markings and related infrastructure will require temporary lane restrictions on Commonwealth in the coming weeks.

A temporary sign has been installed to warn drivers of changes in traffic flow.
