Holyrood is making progress in fixing its water supply after a rough weekend in which about half the town, primarily the south side, had limited or no supply for over 24 hours.

The town’s popular beach party Saturday night was cancelled as a result, and some businesses had to close.

“The Town Centre did have water but with very low pressure, and convenience stores stayed open as did Station Diner. But businesses like Subway, Mary Brown’s, Wong’s and Tim Horton’s had to close,” said Mayor Crawley.

The problems began weeks ago, but the town has found six leaks in the various sections of the lines and is in the process of repairing them. But early Friday afternoon, the pump, which is on Liam Hickey Drive, gave way. Squires Drilling has provided a temporary fix, which was brought online early Saturday night.

A new pump is on its way from New Brunswick, but it won’t be installed immediately. Restrictions imposed a couple of weeks ago on non-essential consumption, such as washing cars, remain in effect.

“We’re pressurizing our tank again with pumps going. As long as the temporary pump is working, we’ll leave that in the ground,” said Mayor Crawley.

“Residents still should expect some interruptions, some pressure changes and discoloration…we still have a long ways to go.”
