The upcoming winter heating season is going to deliver one heavy jolt to the pocketbooks of people who use oil to heat their homes.
Virtually all transportation and heating fuels jumped by about ten cents a litre – give or take a penny or two – on the weekend. That means filling your standard 800-litre oil tank now will cost about $800 more than this time last year.
Heating fuel, according to the Public Utilities Board, cost close to $1.20-litre on the Avalon Peninsula in mid-September, 2025. After the weekend price jump, that’s now about $2.20-litre.

As for gassing up, it was $1.55-litre this time last year on the Avalon – today it’s $2.15. Diesel, the fuel that drives the economy, was $1.56 a year ago – today it’s $2.77.
The cost of diesel fuel has hit a new nationwide high in the United States. The national average is now 6 dollars a gallon – around $1.35 a litre. GasBuddy’s Patrick De Haan explained it may be even more expensive than analysts anticipated:
The VOCM Question of the Day on Sunday asked if high fuel prices were forcing people to change the way they budget their money. Over 80 per cent of respondents said yes, they were.
