The Grand Chief of the Innu Nation calls their relationship with the provincial government strained, going as far to say that there is no relationship with government at this time.

The Innu want the provincial government to change its stance their presence in Labrador, and they want changes to the Churchill Falls agreement to ensure their members can reap the financial benefits of hydro development in the region.

Jodie Ashini says the Innu Nation’s team is ready and willing to meet with government, but Premier Tony Wakeham hasn’t reached out.

She describes a very strained relationship with the province.

“I don’t think there is one. We don’t have a relationship right now with the province. It’s going to take a lot to build that back up, and he’s (Wakeham) not trying at the moment to even do that, so I can’t say there is a relationship.”
