RCMP are investigating after a man was attacked by a dog in North West River.
Billy Gauthier has been going on regular runs through the community for years, and while he’s had encounters with dogs before, nothing compares to the situation he found himself in on Sunday morning.
Gauthier was passing by a property covered with signs warning about the presence of a guard dog when he suddenly realized that the animal in question wasn’t on a leash.
He tried to stay calm, but the animal lunged at him, grabbing him in the ribs.

Billy Gauthier was surprised to see that the dog that attacked him was still tied on outside a home in North West River (Billy Gauthier)
Gauthier says the dog bit him and started shaking its head. “I managed to get it off of me and that’s when the owner started to yell out ‘kick the dog, kick the dog!'”
Gauthier says a driver happened by and he got in the truck to get away from the 123 pound dog. He dreads to think what might have happened had the animal gotten hold of a child or an elder. He says people are well aware of the danger and it’s time for the situation to be addressed.

“This thing has been trained to be a guard dog.” He says he wasn’t doing anything to antagonize the dog and estimates he was a good 100 or more feet away from the driveway when the incident occurred.
Gauthier required tetanus and rabies shots and is on anti-biotics as a result of the attack.
