The provincial government is looking for input on its climate action plan.
Climate Change Minister Andrea Barbour says her plan aims to address disaster resilience, municipal preparedness, and carbon emissions reduction.
She says climate change is a “priority” for the provincial government.
“We are also committed to working with stakeholders to create a new, more attainable climate change action plan with clear and achievable emissions, emission reduction targets,” she stated.
“We understand that addressing climate change is crucial to our well-being and prosperity of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”
NDP MHA Sheilagh O’Leary wonders if the plan is just “window dressing”
“Once again, we’re back to the drawing board on fighting climate change. Given that the department already had a plan, I have to wonder whether the minister’s emphasis on achievable emissions and more attainable and realistic targets are mere window dressing to conceal a plan to cut current standards,” she said in the House of Assembly.
“What is truly unrealistic is to pretend that we have no impact on climate change and that we can carry on business as usual while the costs and consequences mount all around us.”
