It was been a bellwether day for a program designed to help school kids start the day on a full belly.
The annual VOCM Cares/Kids Eat Smart Radiothon raised over $615,000 for breakfast programs at schools throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Donations large and small and everywhere in between came via phone and online so that kids can start the day with a nutritious breakfast.
Executive director Celina Stoyles estimates that one in three kids show up for school in the morning hungry. More heartbreaking, she says, are situations where it is the only meal that a kid has for the entire day.
Keith Boyle, President and CEO of NewFoundGold, says his company and its suppliers see the education system as our future.
Their donation of $75,000 was a little over a year in the making.
And talk about a hole in one, so to speak, on the links.
The Lincoln Walsh Golf Tournament – his aunt Melissa and cousin Logan were at the Radiothon to present the cheque: $24,000.
Judy Crocker, Principal of Helen Tulk Academy in Bishop’s Falls, says her school has been a part of the breakfast program since 1999.
One of their volunteers, who celebrated her 90th birthday last year, got a card from the students on her 90th. Crocker said she told the students that it was the best day of her life.
