A family with deep roots in this province has been forced from their California home due to the raging wildfires there.
Robert Fritz lived and worked in St. John’s and graduated from MUN in 2012, while his mother—Marilyn Hunt—is from Corner Brook.
Fritz now lives in Pasadena, California, about 15 minutes from Monrovia, a hotbed for the fires where his mother, father, and sisters had been living.
Fritz says while the fires are frightening enough, the choking smoke is the immediate concern. He describes it as sitting downwind from a campfire for a week. The sky is brown, you can’t see the sun, and ash is falling like snow.
Fritz has been keeping an eye on his mother’s house for her family, who are staying in Arizona until the fire situation and air quality improves.
