Trades NL says the cancellation of construction under the West White Rose project is devastating news for workers in this province.
Husky Energy confirmed yesterday that construction on the concrete gravity structure will remain on hold for the 2021 season. That, as it continues a review of its Atlantic operations.
The labour group is calling on the federal and provincial governments to work with Husky and their new owners—Cenovus Energy—to resume construction.

Executive director Darin King also wants the province to do everything possible to ensure that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians get first crack at construction jobs.
Trades NL made a presentation to Labour Minister Gerry Byrne last week but King says government has yet to step up to the plate.
Government Optimistic
Energy Minister Andrew Parsons says government remains optimistic that work can resume on the West White Rose despite indications from Husky that they could still walk away from the project.
In a release this week Husky indicated that all options remain on the table despite the fact that West White Rose is key to extending the life of the White Rose.
Minister Parsons says there is still reason for optimism. He says Husky now has a proposal before government that will see work in 2021 in preparation for a possible 2022 startup.
