Unifor’s main focus in going to court against the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is getting an admission that their rights were stepped on during RNC action at a picket line earlier this week.
The union is filing a statement of claim against the police force, claiming their charter right to peacefully picket was violated, resulting in damages.
Kyle Rees, a lawyer at O’Dea Earle, which is one of two firms taking on the case – the other being Sullivan Breen. – says while the union will be claiming monetary damages, their main focus is a declaration that their rights were breached.
He says the union lost its freedom of expression during the police action, which should concern all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
