A Honduran woman, now living in Newfoundland, is reaching out to see what can be done to address the devastation wrought on her native country by Hurricane Eta.
The Category 4 storm roared through Central America last week, leaving a path of destruction. Lives have been lost and many more people have been displaced by flooding.
Ingrid Sierra-Quilty lives in Paradise and says it’s sad to see what is happening in her home country.
She says Honduras is in a dire situation. There is a lot of destruction, people have been killed and thousands more are missing. She says now that the hurricane has passed, they are finding more bodies.
Sierra-Quilty, who still has family and friends in Honduras, says she is very lucky to hear that they are all doing ok. Even so, she wants to help others who are not so fortunate.
Honduras is a third-world country, and Sierra-Quilty says government corruption is making the aftermath of the hurricane more difficult to manage, especially when compounded with COVID-19.
She has reached out to non-profit organizations in Canada to see what can be done and is also working to set up local fundraising campaigns to get humanitarian aid for the country.
An event to raise funds for those affected by the hurricane is scheduled for this Saturday at noon. Event details are at this link.
