For those who think COVID might be no worse than the flu, a Newfoundlander working in Qatar says to take heed.
Rod Drover is a teacher at a private school in the country and believes he picked it up from a child who told him her father had the virus.
While he wore a mask and kept his distance, he suspects he got it by inadvertently touching his own face.
Drover says he had been battling a bit of a lingering cough and cold for a few weeks which he believes weakened his immune system, making him more susceptible to COVID.
He says what started out as the typical flu on January 25th quickly progressed to fighting for every breath.
Drover says within 24 hours he went from experiencing flu-like symptoms to struggling to breathe, resulting in him calling an ambulance which took him to the hospital where he was put in Intensive Care.
He emphasizes the importance of taking COVID seriously. Drover repeats the mantra, keep a physical distance between you and others, wear a mask and keep washing your hands.
