Things heated up in the House of Assembly yesterday on the matter of Muskrat Falls rate mitigation and the province’s massive debt burden.
In an address to the St. John’s Board of Trade this week Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was unable to provide any clarity on if, or when, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can expect to hear how they will be protected from huge increases in power rates once the hydro project comes online later this year.
Opposition Leader David Brazil accused Ottawa of offering “platitudes without details” when it comes to addressing the crushing debt burden faced by the province and questioned whether Newfoundland and Labrador will have to walk the path alone.
Premier Andrew Furey responded by providing numbers on the federal government’s assistance to the province through the pandemic.
Brazil reminded the Premier of another figure; the $10 billion dollars lost to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador following six years with no equalization.
