A large crowd gathered in Bannerman Park yesterday to honour children lying in unmarked graves at residential schools across the country.
The event included Indigenous poetry and the singing of “Legacy”, a song written and composed by Deantha Edmunds to remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and 2-spirited people.
Edmunds led the crowd in a collective performance of the song, as lyrics were provided to those who attended.
She says many people are still struggling to accept the truth behind Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples.
Edmunds says together the country needs to heal and work towards reconciliation. She and her friend Kellie Walsh believed this event was a great way to get people to raise their voices together.
She was happy with the turnout and says everyone was there with open eyes, ears and hearts.
