The accusations continue to fly in the public relations tug of war between the City of St. John’s and former tenants of Mile One Centre.
Owners of the Edge and Newfoundland Growlers insist they were blindsided by the city’s decision to reject their proposal for both teams, while welcoming a new basketball franchise.
Since that happened last week, the war of words has only intensified, with the city sending out yet another news release Monday evening disputing the most recent information from Atlantic Sports Enterprises which owns the Edge, and Growlers’ owners Deacon Sports.
The latest volley has the city denying new language “was slipped into” a draft lease, instead referring back to the revised 10-year lease of 2019 that went unsigned.
Deacon Sports’ chairman Dean McDonald says that’s because the legal version would have required him to be responsible for debt incurred by the Edge.
The city also says the SJSE board and councillors are fully informed on the issue, also contrary to comments by McDonald on Monday
The city declined an interview on the latest volleys, saying it’s eager to work with local group 2001 Investments Ltd. to launch a new basketball franchise for Mile One.
