An 18-year-old is dead following a drowning incident that reportedly involved snowmobile skimming in the waters off Hopedale, yesterday morning.

Police were called to the shoreline near the rock quarry at around 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found another person leaving the waters after an unsuccessful rescue attempt.

Hopedale Ground Search and Rescue were called in but the 18-year-old went below the surface before help could arrive.

He was recovered from the water and brought to the Hopedale Medical Complex, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful and the teen was pronounced dead.
