The provincial government has released information on what they heard as part of public consultations on proposed amendments to the Newfoundland and Labrador Coat of Arms.
The results show that most involved in the process agree that the legal description be altered.
The Coat of Arms and its legal description date to the 1600’s.
It includes a depiction of an animal similar to an elk, and two Beothuk.
It also includes the word “savages” in reference to the two figures on either side of the crest.
Government is planning to update the legal description to remove the word.
Most of those who provided input, 84 per cent, agreed that the description be changed to reference “two Beothuck” instead.
