It’s going to cost the City of St. John’s close to $200,000 to rid itself of tree debris from Hurricane Larry.
Larry walloped the eastern part of the island, especially the Avalon, last month smashing into trees, limbs, power lines and buildings. The city opened up Bowering Park, Quidi Vidi and Robin Hood Bay to people disposing of their material.
Some 2,000 tandem truck loads of debris have gone to the landfill.
Councillor Sandy Hickman wonders why they wouldn’t do the work in-house.
The contract was awarded to Infinity Construction, the only bidder, for $192,000.
The deputy city manager of public works, Lynnann Winsor, says if they disposed of the material in-house, it would take a year and tie up resources.
In addition, they don’t have the industrial equipment to do the job.
