He took the long way around, but a former St. John’s IceCap made his NHL debut last night at the age of 26.
And what a debut it was.
Zach Fucale, who was originally drafted by Montreal in 2013, stopped 21 shots as his Washington Capitals blanked the Detroit Red Wings 3-0.
Fucale, who only a few years ago was backstopping the Brampton Beast of the ECHL, played a couple of seasons with the IceCaps of the AHL.
Fucale is the first goaltender in Capitals history to register a shutout in his NHL debut.
His parents were also in attendance to mark the occasion.
