The Lieutenant Governor is sending her condolences to the family of WWII veteran Hedley Lake who passed away this week at the age of 103.
Lake was on his way home to Newfoundland on board the Caribou when the passenger ferry was struck and sunk by a German U-Boat in the Cabot Strait with tremendous loss of life.
Hedley, who was 24 at the time, survived the ordeal and often recounted the efforts he and other survivors made to help save lives.
Judy Foote visited Lake in August to help celebrate his 103rd birthday at which time he told Foote, “I do not want to leave this planet yet.”
Lake’s family will accept visitors at Wiseman’s Funeral Home in Fortune today and again tomorrow from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will take place at the Fortune United Church on Sunday, December 5th at 2:00 p.m. Donations in his memory may be made to the Royal Canada Legion, the Lung Association or the Fortune United Church.
