A man accused of murdering a woman in downtown St. John’s early Monday has made his first appearance in court.
20-year-old David Quirke is charged with second-degree murder in the death of the 42-year-old woman.
Police were called to a house on Cookstown Road just before 6 a.m.
Inside they found the woman, who had reportedly been stabbed, along with the suspect.
Quirke was arrested as paramedics worked in vain to save the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The relationship between the two has not been confirmed but police say there is no risk to other members of the public.
Quirke remains in custody and is due back in provincial court on January 6.
