Familiar faces, a warm welcome and home-cooked meals were key ingredients to Tyler Boland’s recipe for success in his Newfoundland Growlers debut.
The 25-year-old St. John’s native suited up for the Growlers for the first time Friday night and went on to score his first professional hockey goal after being sent down by the AHL’s Manitoba Moose earlier in the week.
The Growlers swept the Adirondack Thunder in three straight games over the weekend, capping things off with a 6-2 win at Mary Brown’s Centre on Sunday.
Boland scored two goals, including one highlight reel goal, and added 5 assists over the course of the three wins.
He says scoring that first goal in his first game on Friday helped to lift a weight off his shoulders.
Boland says with a lot of family and friends coming out to show their support, it was a special moment to score in front of them. He adds that all his teammates in the dressing room were very supportive.
At a time of year he doesn’t typically get to come home, Boland appreciated some home-cooked meals and time spent with family.
He says when he arrived home Wednesday, his family had a meal ready to go. Spending time with family and friends is something he will always cherish.
The Newfoundland Growlers are back in action to begin a four-game series against the Trois-Rivières Lions this Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Mary Brown’s Centre.
