Cabbies in Corner Brook are pleading with the city for an increase in taxi rates.
A letter from City, Star and Corner taxi states rising fuel prices are killing their business.
They’re seeking a $2 increase to get in a cab, but only as long as regular gas is above $1.65 cents a litre.
The new fuel surcharge would increase the so-called ‘drop rate’ from about $4 to $6.
Director of Protective Services Todd Flynn says he understands the City of St. John’s is entertaining a similar request. He says he’s heard ‘through the grapevine’ that the capital city is considering a similar addition to its bylaw, adding he’s reached out but yet to receive a response.
Councillors noted it’s a delicate balance, weighing the livelihoods of taxi drivers against the added cost for people to get around.
Companies, meanwhile, say provincial rules for Class 4 licences continue to threaten their survival.
