Police in Corner Brook are cautioning the public following recent incidents of “sextortion” in the region.
The RCMP say two recent cases involved perpetrators who created fake social media accounts posing as young local women.
They contacted men and invited them to participate in sexual conversations.
They then shared nude images and videos, before asking the victims to do the same.
Once images were shared, the perpetrator demanded that the victims pay a large sum of money, or else they would share the content publicly with the person’s friends and family.
The RCMP is warning against sharing such images and videos, even if the person in the profile picture is someone you know.
Such incidents should be reported to the local police, and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or at 1-888-495-8501.
