The Newfoundland Equestrian Association is asking drivers to slow down and give horses and their riders lots of space if they encounter them along the roadway following a recent incident that could have ended badly.
Bryanna Steele likes to take her massive horse Boulder out for a ride. To get him from the barn in Logy Bay to the trail and back, she has to take him up along Logy Bay Road where he always gets a bit of attention from passing traffic.
Steele says while many people slow down, smile and wave, one driver recently drove up in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to spook the horse.
Steele, who was riding bareback at the time, says it could have spelt disaster.
She says the car, which was loud, came up behind her and revved its engine loudly, causing the horse to bolt. As a result, she came close to falling from the animal.
Steele maintained control of the horse, but she and other riders are asking the public not to honk their horns or intentionally spook horses when near the road.
