A Newfoundland-bred Labrador Retriever, named after the Battle of Beaumont Hamel, trotted away with the Best in Breed ribbon at the renowned Westminster Kennel Club dog show in New York last week.
The winning entry “Beau” is the offspring of a dog owned by Siobhan Coady, the province’s finance minister, and her husband Pat, who breed Labradors.
Coady calls it an exciting win, adding Beau was animated and happy.
“A true mark of a Labrador, in my opinion, is a happy tail and a happy look,” says Coady.
Beau’s co-owner, Caitlyn O’Brien, couldn’t make it to Westminster for this year’s event, but says it’s clear the dog put on a good show.
“It was one of the best times that I’ve seen him shown,” said O’Brien. “He was up, he was happy. He was just animated. He asked for it and the judge rewarded that.”
