Dates have been set for Kurt Churchill’s second-degree murder trial, while the suspect in a separate killing has been committed to stand trial.
Churchill has chosen to be tried by Supreme Court judge and jury, but potential jurors won’t be summoned any time soon.
Jury selection is set for the first day of trial, in October of 2023—almost 15 months from now.
That’s the first available date for the trial which is expected to last several weeks.
The 45-year-old Churchill is accused of gunning down 47-year-old Jamie Cody outside Churchill’s Craigmillar Avenue home exactly two years ago yesterday, when he was formally arraigned in Supreme Court.
He’s charged with second-degree murder, which suggests he meant to kill Cody in the moment, but never planned it out.
Churchill was granted bail last fall and will remain free until the trial if he continues to abide by the rules of his release.

Meanwhile, a woman charged after a killing in downtown St. John’s last August will also face trial in Supreme Court.
29-year-old Lorraine Obed is accused in the August 26 stabbing death of 49-year-old Jimmy Corcoran on Carter’s Hill.
A judge ruled this week there is enough evidence to go to trial, although formal arraignment and dates have yet to be set.
Obed, who was in a relationship with the victim, remains in custody at the Correctional Centre for Women in Clarenville.
