The nursing shortage could get worse before it gets better.
The health care system all across the country is struggling to try to fill positions, including nurses and doctors.
Yvette Coffey, President of the Registered Nurses Union, says 900 of their members are eligible to retire and with only about 200 nurses graduating this year, we’re falling backward instead of moving forward.
She says many nurses have only had a couple of days of vacation in the past few years.
She says we have to retain the people we have in the system and recruit new people. She suggests recruitment and retention bonuses, looking at child care in the workplace and supporting nursing students.
