The CEO of the St. John’s International Airport Authority is retiring after 17 years at the helm.
Peter Avery, who was the director of infrastructure and planning for his first 14 years with the airport, moved to the top position three years ago.
During his stint he oversaw the expansion of the terminal building to almost double the original footprint, as well as installation of the Category 3 Instrument Landing System.
The fog-battling technology has enabled YYT to virtually eliminate cancelled landings due to reduced visibility.
In a statement, Avery said he’s proud and grateful to have spent over half his professional career with an organization that provides a pivotal function to the province and its people.
“I retire with such a profound sense of happiness for what our team has accomplished. My wife and I consider ourselves very lucky to both, simultaneously, embark upon retirement and this next chapter spent together with our family.”
The airport’s board of directors will now embark on a search process for a new CEO.
