The only thing clear about the day of mourning on Monday is that it’s shaping up to be one confusing mixed bag as to what is open and what is not.
NAPE President Jerry Earle says they have been inundated with calls from workers and even employers wondering what’s what.
Federal and provincial government offices will be closed on Monday but child care centres are split on whether to open or close. With schools closed, some parents are now scrambling for child care space.
Similar confusion exists with municipalities as some, including St. John’s, are not marking the holiday while others are.
Some workers simply cannot take the day as appointments have already been scheduled.
Clinics and tests at health facilities were scheduled, in some cases, months ago and cannot be cancelled, says Earle.
Earle says a home-care worker who took the day would not be paid.
