High winds continue to whip up the heavy, wet snow which continues to fall on the eastern portion of Newfoundland.
The heaviest snow fell overnight, but there’s still more to come for the Avalon Peninsula today.
Numerous accidents were reported in the metro area, despite warnings to stay off the roads, but no serious injuries were reported.
Metrobus and GoBus service, which had been suspended for most of the day, was set to resume as of 2:30 Saturday afternoon, while an update on the status of the Avalon Mall was expected by 2 p.m.
All recreational facilities in St. John’s and Mount Pearl are also closed for the day, including the Glacier, forcing cancellation of Home Show 2023 on Saturday. As a result, the hours for tomorrow’s session have been changed to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As well, officials with the Department of Transportation and Works say the Witless Bay Line is completely blocked and closed
About 20 cms of snow fell overnight at St. John’s International Airport, with similar amounts recorded on the southern Avalon and Burin Peninsula.
A winter storm warning has ended for the Burin Peninsula, but according to Environment Canada meteorologist Brendan Sawchuk, Mother Nature is not finished with the metro region.
He says the northern Avalon is expecting another 5 – 10 cms this morning and into the early afternoon. Along with strong northeasterly gusts of around 90 km/h, visibility is expected to be an issue for most of Saturday.
Police say the off-ramps for the Outer Ring Road and Manuals Access Road remain partially blocked due to snow buildup.
They say stranded vehicles along the roadways are making it difficult for first responders to get around and residents should stay off the roads until conditions improve.
