It’s an accomplishment few get to experience—completing six major marathons across the world.
One Newfoundland woman has crossed the finish line for the sixth time, placing 13th out of hundreds in her age group at the 2023 World Marathon Majors in Tokyo.
Mary Anne Griffin got into running a decade ago as a hobby, but it has since taken her all over the world to participate in international races in Boston, London, Berlin, and most recently Japan.
Completing the run in Japan was an extraordinary achievement for Griffin, she says it was the last major marathon left to complete.
She trained up to six days a week all winter ahead of the marathon. On March 5, she joined the small group of roughly 10,000 other people in the world to have completed every major world marathon.
Griffin won’t be hanging up her running shoes yet. After finding out her placement in her last run, she’s received an invite to the next world marathon.
Details on where the next race will be held have yet to be announced, but Griffin expects she’ll be travelling to a major city like New York, Boston, or even a return to Tokyo.
