Premier Andrew Furey is pleased with Marine Atlantic’s decision to delay their fuel surcharge increase until December.
The new fuel surcharge system, which was supposed to come into effect today, would have seen rates jump from 13 to 17 per cent.
In the meantime, they will be reviewing fuel pricing measures, and the implementation of the federal carbon tax this summer.
Furey says they were upset with the increase from day one, and from day one they have been working to find a solution. He says a temporary solution has been found for now, but the discussion is not over.
He hopes that it will provide some certainty for the summer tourism season, and he is hopeful that the federal government will give the issue the proper attention moving forward.
