Oceana Canada is concerned about the commercial capelin fishery and DFO’s failure to pause it.
They previously supported DFO’s decision to keep the mackerel fishery closed. Now the organization is asking for more information from the department to justify keeping the commercial capelin fishery open.
Marine scientist Jack Daly has been visiting beaches in and around St. John’s and taking in the capelin roll. He says their concern is not just specific to capelin.
He says there has been only silence from DFO. He says DFO has set the same quota for the capelin fishery for the past three years with no change, despite changes in the data on the stock.
