Government gave an update today on the new mental health and addictions facility – or Waterford Hospital – in St. John’s.
Construction of earthen berms to hold back flood waters would have had to happen in any event, according to Works Minister Steve Crocker.

The new Waterford will be built next to the Health Sciences on the south side and will be integrated with the existing hospital. Linking it in with the Health Sciences allows it to integrate services already available including emergency.
Hurricane Igor pushed the surrounding waters to within inches of the basement of the Health Sciences in 2010, so the erection of two berms would have been done with or without the new Waterford.

Government says there will be no effects upstream or downstream.
It’s likely that a parking garage with a capacity of at least 500 vehicles will be built.
It’s expected that tenders will be called in the next few months.
