A vigil is being held in Dildo tomorrow to remember the lives of two young women killed as the result of a collision on the Trans Canada Highway in January.
Haley Keating of Long Harbour, Placentia Bay and Erin Pretty of Dildo, Trinity Bay were both just 22-years-old.
Pretty died at the scene, while Keating died in hospital a few days later.
Michelle Reid, a police officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, says she saw the gaps for support in the community and decided to organize the vigil. She wanted to create a space for family, friends and the community to come together and support one another in their grief.
Reid says the impact on the community is far-reaching.
She says Erin and Haley were two bright, young, beautiful souls who had their whole lives ahead of them. She says there is probably not a person in the small community of Trinity South – Placentia Bay who didn’t know them. She says the community is tight-knit, and the impact has been incredible.
Reid says she has lived in the community her whole life, and her daughters grew up with Erin and Haley. She has seen first-hand how difficult this has been for young people to process the tragedy.
She says she sees the grief and confusion on the faces of young people in the area. Reid says the vigil is about letting them know that they are not alone, and the community is there for them for the long-term.
The vigil will be held at the Lion’s Center in Dildo Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30. Reid is asking people to bring a flower to honour Erin’s memory, and a candle in support of Haley.
