Thirty-year-old Lorraine Obed has been sentenced to 4.5 years in the stabbing death of 49-year-old Jimmy Corcoran.
The incident played out in the early evening on Carter’s Hill on Aug. 26, 2021.
Obed was charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of manslaughter last fall. With credit for time served since the offence, she has less than one year left to serve.
Obed will then be subject to 3-year probation order.
Justice Glen Noel cited a new approach being used to sentencing Indigenous peoples, with a focus on alternatives to prison time. Obed is an Inuk originally from Nain.
