An aerial survey of Moose Management Area 29, which covers the Bonavista Peninsula, is planned for the coming weeks depending on snow condition. Results are expected to be available by late spring.
That particular zone was last surveyed ten years ago with an estimated 4,800 moose. Information compiled from hunters suggests the number of animals seen, as well as hunting success, has declined over the past decade. Such a decline could be due to habitat factors and harvest levels.
The planned survey and analysis of jawbone data will inform future quotas.
