The Health Sciences Centre has been recognized by Choosing Wisely Canada for its efforts to find efficiencies, and reduce waste and harm.

According to Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, the facility has been recognized as a Choosing Wisely Canada hospital at the quality improvement status level.

They say hospitals receive the designation by reducing the use of unnecessary medical procedures, creating efficiencies, optimizing healthcare resources, and improving the quality and safety of patient care .

The health authority says they’ve achieved this through avoiding unnecessary tests that are often ordered too frequently, reducing unnecessary red blood cell transfusions, and by implementing a Choosing Wisely Toolkit that provides guidance on the types of tests completed prior to surgeries.
