Canadian Union of Postal Workers local president Craig Dyer is suspicious of the timing of a Canada Post news release indicating that the corporation recorded a loss of $748 million in 2023 and that more losses are expected unless changes are made.
Dyer says Canada Post is entering the sixth month of contract negotiations with CUP-W’s two main bargaining units, urban and rural, and he believes the corporation is trying to instill fear in its unionized workers.
“Did we really lose $740 million dollars?” Dyer asks. “They’re investing hundreds of millions of dollars across the country in new technologies, in new facilities, in new vehicles, so that’s a controllable expense. So you know, to say that we lost that? I’d like to have somebody check the books on that one.”
Canada Post hiked the price of a single stamp this week by eight cents to $1.15, while stamps purchased in a booklet, or coil, increased by seven cents to 99 cents per stamp.
