The province’s health authority is providing an update on the outbreak of pertussis—or whooping cough—in the eastern zone.
NL Health Services says the Medical Officer of Health and Communicable Disease Control team are working with other health-care professionals to monitor and respond to the evolving situation.
They are investigating cases reported to public health, identifying close contacts of those who have tested positive and taking measures to control the spread.
A testing clinic has been set up at 50 Mundy Pond Road in St. John’s and is by appointment only. Referrals from a primary care provider are not needed, but those looking to book and appointment can do so by calling 709-752-7852 or texting 1-877-709-0512.
Testing will only be available for people who meet both of public health’s criteria.
- Those who are experiencing symptoms of whopping cough—such as mild fever, runny nose, red watery eyes and a cough or a cough that has gotten worse over time, leading to severe, repeated or forceful coughing spells.
- And someone who has been identified as having contact with a person with whooping cough.
People who meet both criteria are encouraged to book an appointment.
If someone is experiencing symptoms, but has not had contact with a person with whooping cough, should contact their primary care provider or call 811.
