A young girl in Green’s Harbour is being hailed as a hero after saving her mother and sister from a house fire last week.
Seven-year-old Jayme White got up from her mom’s bed to let their puppy, Bruce, out to do its business, but she couldn’t get him to come back in.
That’s when she noticed smoke coming from the house.
Her mother, Desiree Jackson, says her daughter immediately woke up the family and everyone got out safely.
“She ran on in through it all, and got me out of bed,” says Jackson, adding the puppy’s hesitation to return may have been a sign.
She says the fire appears to have started in her son’s room, and she couldn’t see into her other daughter’s adjoining bedroom through the flames and smoke.
“All I could see were the flames over my head. (Jayme) tried to run through that to get her sister and I had to tell her no!”
Jackson says she ran in, got Jayme’s sister up, and they all went next door for help.
She credits Jayme for saving their lives.
“If she hadn’t awakened us, I have no doubt that her sister or I would not be here today.”
